Anomalous scaling of fracture surfaces

چکیده

We argue that fracture surfaces may exhibit anomalous dynamic scaling properties akin to what occurs in some models of kinetic roughening. We determine the complete scaling behavior of the local fluctuations of a brittle fracture in a granite block from experimental data. We obtain a global roughness exponent x51.2 which differs from the local one, x loc50.79. Implications on fracture physics are discussed. @S1063-651X~98!01506-2#

Statistical Physics of Fracture Surfaces Morphology

Experiments on fracture surface morphologies offer increasing amounts of data that can be analyzed using methods of statistical physics. One finds scaling exponents associated with correlation and structure functions, indicating a rich phenomenology of anomalous scaling. We argue that traditional models of fracture fail to reproduce this rich phenomenology and new ideas and concepts are called ...

Roughening of fracture surfaces: the role of plastic deformation.

Post mortem analysis of fracture surfaces of ductile and brittle materials on the microm-mm and the nm scales, respectively, reveal self-affine cracks with anomalous scaling exponent zeta approximately 0.8 in three dimensions and zeta approximately 0.65 in two dimensions. Attempts to use elasticity theory to explain this result failed, yielding exponent zeta approximately 0.5 up to logarithms. ...

Anisotropic self-affine properties of experimental fracture surfaces

The scaling properties of post-mortem fracture surfaces of brittle (silica glass), ductile (aluminum alloy) and quasi-brittle (mortar and wood) materials have been investigated. These surfaces, studied far from the initiation, were shown to be self-affine. However, the Hurst exponent measured along the crack direction is found to be different from the one measured along the propagation directio...

Morphology of two dimensional fracture surfaces

We consider the morphology of two dimensional cracks observed in experimental results obtained from paper samples and compare these results with the numerical simulations of the random fuse model (RFM). We demonstrate that the data obey multiscaling at small scales but cross over to self-affine scaling at larger scales. Next, we show that the roughness exponent of the random fuse model is recov...

Conformal modes in simplicial quantum gravity and the Weil-Petersson volume of moduli space

Our goal here is to present a detailed analysis connecting the anomalous scaling properties of 2D simplicial quantum gravity to the geometry of the moduli space Mg,N0 of genus g Riemann surfaces with N0 punctures. In the case of pure gravity we prove that the scaling properties of the set of dynamical triangulations with N0 vertices are directly provided by the large N0 asymptotics of the Weil-...
